John Glenn came to Richmond from Louisville, KY in the 1980's to tour with Theatre IV and soon became Associate Artistic Director under Theatre IV founder, Bruce Miller. In this position he served as director, performer, producer and designer. During this time he oversaw the creation of more than 20 original scripts. In 1992, after more than ten years with Theatre IV, John was named Artistic Director of Barksdale Theatre. During his tenure with Barksdale Theatre, he not only directed acclaimed productions of a variety of diverse plays and musicals including Molly Sweeney, Once on This Island, Falsettos, and the world premiere of the Charles Strouse/Sammy Cahn musical Bojangles, but also led the organization through a capital campaign which culminated in the design and construction of Barksdale's new space at Willow Lawn (now The Children's Theatre of Virginia.) John relocated to Hailey, ID in 2000, to help build a professional theatre company – Company of Fools.
During John's tenure at Company of Fools, he oversaw 21 seasons and over 150 productions. John was brilliant and accomplished in all aspects of theatre - acting, directing, designing, and producing. When not on the stage, John mentored, directed and supported those in the spotlight, providing guidance through thoughtful decisions, true depth of feeling and a dedication to his craft and community. In 2016, John received the Idaho Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts – one of the highest honors in the state for the arts – in recognition of his lifetime of achievement and impactful contributions to the arts and to the community at large.
John died unexpectedly in June due to complications from back surgery. John's husband, fellow Richmond theatre actor and teacher RL Rowsey, and members of John's family will be joining us for this very special celebration to honor the life of our dear friend. All are welcome.
