Closer Than Ever is a an intimate musical revue. While the songs do not follow a particular plot, they are related in theme in that they each tell a story about relationships, family, and friendship. The musical is not a holiday show but the often humorous lyrics are very uplifting and perfect for a cozy winter evening. They're about love, friendship, security, and happiness - holding onto those essentials in a world that seems to spin faster every day.
In 1989, the New York Times described it as "one of the half-dozen finest American theater scores of the last decade.” This Off Broadway classic originally opened with a smash hit production in Greenwich Village in 1989, and was most recently revived in NYC this season, once again earning universal raves from critics and audiences alike. That recent hit revival closed recently after a sold-out five month run.
