Virginia Repertory Theatre
Disney Musicals in Schools, a partnership between Disney Theatrical Group and Virginia Repertory Theatre, builds sustainable musical theater programs in Title 1 public elementary schools in our surroundings cities and counties.
Each year up to five schools are selected to receive free performance rights to produce a 30-minute Disney KIDS musical at their school. Over 17 weeks, Virginia Rep Teaching Artists guide the school teams through the process of mounting a musical through choreography, directing, stage management, music directing, producing, and production management. The goal of the program is to establish the training necessary for the schools to produce their own shows for years to come.
The program culminates in a Student Share Celebration in which each school performs one number from their show for an audience of students, teachers, family and community members.
Through this process the students develop self-confidence, collaboration, leadership and strengthen speaking and reading skills while learning to perform in a musical.

Disney Musicals in Schools has helped schools across the country launch new theater programs. Benefits include the positive relationships that grow among students, faculty, staff, parents and the community. Students and teachers work in teams, developing the wide spectrum of skills needed to produce musical theater, including critical thinking, problem solving, ensemble building, communication, self-confidence and interpersonal skills.

Staff from Bensley, Crestwood, Harrowgate and Reams Road Elementary schools were recognized at the press conference. Beginning in January, the schools will participate in a 17-week musical theater residency at no cost, led by a team of Virginia Rep teaching artists trained by Disney Theatrical Group.
