What does “Mamma Mia!” mean to an Italian? In My Corner of Italy, writer and Italian language expert Laura Teso writes: “’Mamma Mia!’ literally means ‘My Mom!’, but it’s an Italian exclamation that can convey so many different, heartfelt emotions: surprise, fear, joy, exasperation, love. It’s as if the expression acknowledges every over-the-top passion all Italian mothers hold in their hearts. I say it at least once a day. At least.” With great love and respect, we joyfully dedicate this production of Mamma Mia! to the memory of our dear friend, Charlotte McCutcheon. Charlotte wasn’t Italian, but she certainly overflowed with passion. As a faithful member of our Board of Directors, an admiring audience stalwart, and a steadfast pal, Charlotte (along with her late husband Andy) brought great joy to Virginia Rep with every interaction. We loved her, and will miss her forever. Can we get a “Charlotte McCutcheon!!”?
